Weight: 200 pounds
Body of Work: Cougar Town, Private Practice, CSI: Miami
One of the stars of ABC’s hit show Cougar Town just turned 40, and it’s not ageless Courteney Cox. For her costar Josh Hopkins, that birthday meant it was time to rethink his entire workout strategy. Again. “I experienced the same thing when I turned 30,” says Hopkins. “I woke up, and both knees hurt.” So now he’s saying good-bye to plyometrics, sprints, and heavy lifting, and hello to overall functional training. “Everything he does now simulates everyday movements,” says O’Neil Cespedes, Hopkins’ trainer for the past three years.
Finding that ideal workout mix been a challenge. “I’m naturally more muscular than skinny,” says Hopkins. “I have to do a lot of cardio to keep my heart rate up.” Everyday cardio wasn’t the right fit either. “I wasn’t really good at it,” he says. “It was frustrating to be out on a jog with my friends and not be able to keep up—especially when they all weighed like 140 pounds.” Instead, the Kentucky-born actor prefers playing sports. “I like that endorphin rush. I think that just stayed with me.”
The Josh Hopkins Workout
“Josh used to train with Freddie Roach and is probably, hands down, the hardestpuncher I’ve ever held the pads for,” says Cespedes. One of his regular weekly workoutsessions still incorporates traditional and Thai boxing strikes.Cespedes trains Hopkins three times a week, usually at a local park, armed with little more than a 45-pound kettlebell. “We do a lot of straight supersets,” says Hopkins. “I’ve got to constantly burn calories. I can get fat pretty quickly.”
When he can’t find the time for his proper workout, Hopkins makes do on set with 45 minutes of machine-based cardio during lunch. “I would love to say my body’s a temple, but a lot of it is just vanity,” he says with a laugh. “If I had the choice, I’d rather look good.
